Will Brian Burke Fire Ron Wilson after Public Outcry?
Ron Wilson is one of those NHL coaches that immediately upon hearing his name, one thinks of his long list of credentials. Tuesday night marked his 1400th game as an NHL coach; and he’s up there with having the most wins under his belt as a coach. His skill is there, and has proven itself time and time again. The question is not whether or not the man can coach; it’s whether or not he can coach the current Toronto Maple Leafs.
On this past milestone Tuesday evening, it wasn’t just a big career-mark for Wilson, it was also a must-win game for the Leafs. Facing the Florida Panthers, the Leafs were chasing them for a playoff spot, and coming right off making a few trades the day before, it was time for Toronto to show the world that they were there to fight. And for Wilson to show that he could pull his team together.
It all ended just 13 seconds after face-off. After an embarrassing defensive play, the Panthers took the lead 1-0, and it went downhill from there. It wasn’t long after that the fans started chanting “FI-RE WIL-SON” from the stands. This too is nothing new; albeit a bit disappointing for Wilson. But fans and the media have been talking about firing Wilson for some time. The question is whether or not Brian Burke will actually do it.
Burke and Wilson have a long-standing history. And maybe even more than that, they have a long-standing friendship. With these two, it goes way back to the days they shared a college dorm room together, and played together for the Providence College Friars hockey team. Burke did not hire Wilson to coach for the Leafs, but known for his loyalty, Wilson hasn’t gone anywhere since Burke’s come onto the team. Despite what fans and experts have said.
Burke has said that he’s not going to allow personal feelings to get in the way of business decisions; and in the end, he’ll probably do the right thing. Ron Wilson is a great coach, there’s no denying that. But his team is no longer listening to him, and he’s simply no longer effective in this organization. And let’s not forget that he’s in the biggest hockey town in the biggest hockey country in the world — a place where public outcry accounts for a lot.
Marilyn Manson – Experience the Horror and the Magic
There is something both grotesque and yet very boyish about Marilyn Manson, the same shock rocker who took the time to sing, “This is Halloween” a tribute to the fantasy film The Nightmare Before Christmas. He is a shock rocker from hell who still takes the time to laugh at the absurdity of his own performance art. (Though you’ll rarely see him laughing in public and breaking character)
In fact, Brian Hugh Warner, a.k.a. Marilyn Manson, started out as a music journalist. It was only when he invented his Goth character Marilyn Manson (by combining two iconic American images: Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson) that he found his niche audience. Eventually, Manson received mainstream attention (and more than a little controversy) for his outrageous clothing, his hardcore lyrics and his outrageous live concerts.
Since his less-than-Satanic beginnings, (the original band name was “Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids”!) Manson has achieved great strides in the music industry with such popular albums as Smells Like Children and Antichrist Superstar. Three of the band’s albums have gone platinum and three more have gone gold. In between awesome concerts, Manson has been up to some rather bizarre shenanigans. He launched his own Mansinthe line of Swiss absinthe, and found time to date all sorts of beautiful actresses, including Evan Rachel Wood. Manson proved he was an old romantic at heart, by proposing to Wood during a Paris stage performance. So, it didn’t work out, but come on, a proposal in Paris is as touchy-feely romantic as a guy can get!
One of the most peculiar statements Manson has made is that he wants to de-emphasize music and explore a filmmaking career. He once told the press, “I just don’t think the world is worth putting music into right now. I no longer want to make art that other people–particularly record companies–are turning into a product. I just want to make art.”
Not that we want to burst Marilyn Manson’s bubble. As far as we’re concerned, he’s still a black magic-practicing maniac and a bad influence on your children (because that’s what sells!). So believe all the urban legends, you know, the ones that suggest Manson buys human skeletons and human skin masks, that he collects Nazi memorabilia, and that’s he’s just evil personified.
So if you’re evil and you know it clap your hands…and come see Marilyn Manson’s shock rock, glam metal show in person!
Now You Can “Watch the Throne” in Europe
If Jay-Z and Kanye West weren’t sure what fan reaction would be to their collaborative album “Watch the Throne,” any doubts have not only now been squelched, but the two are talking about making another album — and soon too!
The two hip hop icons were out on the road for most of last year promoting their album by the same name; and it seemed that just when they wrapped up one leg they would announce another. The next leg is the European leg; and while it’s not as extensive as many artists like to make the overseas trek, the two will be performing 12 shows in some of the biggest venues around the globe, including the notorious O2 Arena, which will open the tour on May 20. From there they’ll be around Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, and two shows to be played in Paris.
During the show, songs from “Watch the Throne” are some of the most loved performed by the two. But they each also get their own solo time on the stage to flaunt their stuff and showcase their own music off their solo records.
And there’s more “Throne” news than just the new leg of the tour. Jay-Z also spilled the beans to MTV last December that we shouldn’t be surprised if there’s another collaboration album this year. Jay-Z says that the two are “in a great place creatively,” and that a solo effort from each also isn’t out of the question. He also continued to say, “You might see a Jay, then Kanye, and a Throne album out next year.”
Could fans really be so lucky?
Ringo Starr Travels around North America this Summer
Ringo Starr, often known as “the forgotten Beatle,” is making sure that people know he’s still making music, and he’s going to bring it to as many of them as he can on his new tour with the All Starr Band. The tour is going to be promoting his new album “Ringo 2012,” which was released at the end of last month; and as for the tour, there are already plenty of stops, and even more coming.
The tour is set to kick off with two nights at the luxurious Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada on June 14 and 15. From there, Ringo and his band will travel to New York, Hollywood, Orange Beach, Atlanta, Nashville, and tons of other stops around the U.S. After releasing the first 13 dates, Starr had said in a press release that more would be released; leaving many Canadians to hope that the tour would include more northern dates. Unfortunately though, no more Canadian dates were announced and the kickoff dates are the only ones Ringo will play in Canada
This isn’t the first time that Ringo has traveled with his All-Starr band, but it will be the first time for many of the members in it. While Todd Rundgren and Richard Page have both tagged along before to support Ringo on his tour, this time he’s also bringing Steve Lukather and Gregg Rolie, better known as Santana to many. Gregg Bissonette and saxophonist, Mark Rivera, will also be along for the ride.

The Underground Railroad takes the Stage, bringing History to Children
What better time than during Black History Month to teach kids today about the Underground Railroad? That’s just what the traveling theater group, Bright Star Touring Theater, thought when they came up with the idea for their show, “Heroes of the Underground Railroad.” During the show, two actors take this very difficult and complicated subject matter and tailor it to school-aged children. The show is entertaining and educational, and is truly something the entire family can enjoy!
The shows two performers, Kaurie Daniels and Travis Emery, take on the roles of six different characters: Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, Henry “Box” Brown, and John Parker to name a few that were monumental in the success of the Underground Railroad. As they take to the stage and re-enact traveling the different routes to safe houses along the “Railroad” way, the story unfolds about how badly slaves were treated in the late 1800s, and the heroic measures they, and the abolitionists that supported them, took to escape the life of slavery.
To get children even more involved and educated about this meaningful time in American history, there is a question and answer period at the end of every show. But this show isn’t just about kids. While it’s especially made for school-aged children in grade three and higher, all of the parents that come love taking the time to hear a story they haven’t heard in years, and to brush up on their history.
If you want to learn more about the Underground Railroad including the secret that were used along the way, and the true danger that both the slaves and the abolitionists put themselves at risk for, visit the Orange County Main Library, where the show is running until March 31, 2012. It’s the seventh year that the show has returned, and it becomes more popular every year. Get your tickets now and embark on an afternoon of fun and history, all wrapped into one!
Mixed Emotions Reign Supreme at This Year’s Grammy Awards
With Adele‘s first performance back since her throat surgery, a highly anticipated performance by Taylor Swift, and L.L. Cool J playing the role of host, the 2012 Grammy Awards were already something that had everyone talking. But with the sudden and tragic death of Whitney Houston on Saturday afternoon, the tone had to drastically change. And while the usual celebration and lively performances could still be found at the awards show on Sunday night, they were definitely intermixed with some very somber tones.
After Bruce Springsteen opened the show with his lively rendition of “We Take Care of our Own,” LL Cool J stepped out onto the stage. Not wanting to waste a minute before paying his respects, he announced that he wanted to open the show with a prayer for Whitney Houston. It might be some time before anyone sees a stadium filled with the biggest celebrities to bow their heads in prayer at the same time again. None of it was lip service though; as the prayer continued and the camera spanned the crowd, many were seen wiping tears away for Whitney. The somber mood would be seen again throughout the night, but until then there were still some high notes to hit.
One of those was one of the most highly-anticipated moments of the evening, Adele’s performance — her first since September of last year, and since having Lasik surgery on her vocal chords. That voice was unmistakable though, as the sweet soulful notes of “Rolling in the Deep” filled the Staples Center. She looked a little bit terrified as the camera zoomed in on her belting out the powerful acoustic notes, but as the song grew to its powerful chorus, so did Adele’s confidence, and she was off and running. Throat surgery? What throat surgery? Adele brought down the house and Gwyneth Paltrow said it best when she introduced the star, “We’re so glad to have her back.”
Shortly after Adele’s comeback performance, Taylor Swift had one of her own. Oh, Swift has never gone anywhere, releasing her third studio album, Speak Now, last year. But she did get back at critics very clearly with her performance of “Mean,” in which she switched up the last line to now say, “Someday I’ll be singin’ this at the Grammy’s….and all you’re ever gonna’ be is mean.” Another huge performance that got everyone on their feet, and had Taylor once again looking around at her audience (this time huge A-listers instead of fans,) and seeming to be in awe that the applause was for her.
But the saddest moment was yet to come, and everyone was waiting for it. It came after the annual tribute to the biggest stars in music that had passed away over the year. It’s a tribute the Grammy’s prepares every year to pay their respect, but it did have a more personal feel this year with Whitney’s passing still so fresh. As the montage ended, with a picture of Ms. Houston closing it out, the crowd was silent and a spotlight appeared on the stage. There stood Jennifer Hudson, all on her own, for the memorial that everyone was waiting for. No pressure.
Jennifer Hudson didn’t show pressure. What she did show was an incredibly upset young woman, who was trying as best she could to hold it together so she could pay her respects to one of her idols. And she did it flawlessly. Belting out one of Whitney’s most recognizable songs, “I Will Always Love You,” Hudson changed the last line of the song singing instead, “Whitney, we will always love you.” The memorial, and the song, was kept short; but with not a dry eye in the house after Hudson sang, no one could have handled too much more of that.
To close out the awards, Nicki Minaj followed current trends by bringing an alter-ego onto stage with her to perform in an exorcism; an odd choice for a Grammy debut. And of course, to close out the show, the big award of the night – Album of the Year. Just like she did in every other category she was nominated in, Adele took home that trophy too.
Bonnie Raitt’s got a New Single, a New Tour, and a New Album
Bonnie Raitt fans are a patient bunch. At the beginning of her career they were spoiled with an album almost every year, until she dropped off to making a record every two or three years. But there has never been a lag like the one between her 2005 album “Souls Alike” and her upcoming album “Slipstream,” which will be released in April 2012 — making for a total of 7 years in between each. But Ms. Raitt is thankful for the patience her fans have shown and that’s why along with her 16th studio album, she’s also going on tour to promote it.
The tour will begin on May 1 on Newkirk, Oklahoma where it will then travel around the United States and Canada for a total of 31 performances. Notable stops along the way are the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 6; Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada on May 26; the Beacon Theatre in New York on June 20; and the show on June 24 in Hyannis, Massachusetts, which will wrap it all up.
“Slipstream” isn’t available in stores until April 20, but you can buy it before then on iTunes, Amazon, and anywhere digital music is sold. If you have to wait until it hits the shelves, you can get a sneak peek of it by listening to her first single from the album, “Right Down the Line” here, on “Rolling Stone’s” exclusive stream.
Billy Elliot Taps His Way Onto the Stage in Your State!
Who wasn’t moved by the amazing 2000 film Billy Elliot? This film by Stephen Daldry told a simple tale of a boy who loved to dance, as well as the journey to the top of the mountain. A rarity of entertainment; Billy Elliot actually started as a screenplay (precisely what you saw in the movie) and then became a novel by Melvin Burgess and then a musical play in 2005.
The film was an amazing demonstration of filmmaking, as it was a simple and yet very grand and emotional drama that shattered clichés of ballet being a woman or gay man’s art. The story is that of a boy named Billy Elliot, who has no mother, a disapproving father, and a talent for ballet–one that he prizes far above the “manly” sport of boxing. Much of the film’s pathos comes as a result of the time period; right at the peak of the U.K. Miner’s Strike.
The musical is based on the movie and features original songs as well as the familiar story. Of course, it’s hard to follow up such a great film without something extra. That’s why the music features the talent of Sir Elton John, with lyrics by original screenwriter Lee Hall. The musical was highly successful and won many awards, including America’s most prestigious Tony Award for Best Musical. In fact, it swept the Tony Awards entirely in 2009, winning Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Director, among other awards.
Now Billy Elliot‘s legacy continues on, as it has toured all over the U.K. and Australia, in overseas countries, on Broadway, on tour in the U.S. and even in youth theatre. The true legacy of Billy Elliot is in its message; that regardless of gender or background, a dream is a dream and it can be accomplished against the odds. The final moments of the film and the play both end on a happy note, and the latter with two memorable musical numbers: “The Letter (Billy’s Reply)” and “Finale”.
Come see the magic in person and feel the “electricity” that happens when a boy realizes his dream!
Where is Dwight Howard Going to Go?
Dwight Howard has not been happy being a part of the Orlando Magic ever since his own magic was taken away after the 2009 NBA Finals. Howard wants to be part of a “Big Three” type of situation that’s currently happening in Miami; and he’s bitter towards the Magic, who traded away his possible chance for that shortly after the Finals in 2009.
This is true at least, according to Courtney Lee, who played with Howard during the Finals that year. After Orlando lost to the Lakers, many of Howard’s key teammates were traded to the New Jersey Nets; and it’s this that Lee says began the demise of Howard in an Orlando uniform. When talking about the Howard situation recently, Lee said, “I’m not surprised. When they broke up the team in 2009, you could just see the frustration in Dwight’s face. We talked about it a couple of times and you could just tell he was upset about it. Most franchise NBA players are involved in the decision-making. Dwight’s feeling like he’s not involved.”
Now, Howard’s sick of playing for a losing team and is looking for a new city to call home. Preferably one with a few major players. But will he be able to get it? In order for Orlando to trade Howard, they’ll have to get some pretty big players in return, possibly leaving Howard with just as average a team as the one he’s leaving. But who are those possibilities? Here are the most likely trade situations as they stand now:
- Howard could go to the Lakers in exchange for Andrew Bynum. However, the Lakers are also looking at signing Gilbert Arenas; that would be good for Howard, since the two are friends and have played together before, but could the Lakers afford it?
- The L.A. Clippers are other potentials for Howard, but they’d have to get rid of just about everyone but Chris Paul. Howard has expressed interest in playing with Paul, and if they can manage to also keep Blake Griffin, it’d be an outstanding team.
- The Chicago Bulls are a great fit for Howard, and with Derrick Rose the two could be unstoppable. But Howard hasn’t mentioned Chicago and with Adidas as his sponsor, there’s even talk it’s actually Nike holding Howard back.
Of those possible teams, only one makes Howard’s wish list, and that’s the Lakers. His other main two teams he’d like to be traded to are the New Jersey Nets and the Dallas Mavericks; although he keeps expanding that with every passing day. Where do you think Dwight Howard will end up?
Spend a Night with a Legend of Psychiatry in “Freud’s Last Session”
You don’t hear much about Sigmund Freud these days, as pop psychology (ala Dr. Phil and Oprah) is the definite trend in 2012. However, Freud, even in all his antiquated ideas, was a revolutionary that practically invented most of what we know today as individual psychotherapy.
You wouldn’t think such a complex figure would be stage material, but the legendary psychiatrist proves his versatility in Freud’s Last Session. This play tells the story of a meeting between psychiatrist Dr. Sigmund Freud and a young rising author and critic, C.S. Lewis. The drama is set into place as the invited Lewis clashes with Freud, not over Lewis’ satirical depiction of him, but over much larger and significant issues.
The play is a cross between a debate on the meaning of life and a touching drama, as it takes place two weeks before Freud’s self-willed death, and just before England enters into World War II in 1939. The bold new play was written by Mark St. Germain, a playwright and TV writer whose claims to fame include The Cosby Show and the documentary My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story. His new newest feature premiered in 2009 at the Barrington Stage Company, MA and is now playing in New York City at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater. It has already won an award: the Best Play Award from the Off Broadway Alliance!
The play currently stars Mark H. Dold (C.S. Lewis), Martin Rayner (Sigmund Freud) and
Tuck Milligan as standby. This is a great play for history buffs, Freud followers and really anyone that loves well written, tragic-comical story. It’s not just a play about god, sex and life–it’s about everything we know as the human experience.
If you do a image search for this play, you will see some great pictures with pop-in celebrities who went and saw the production. We’re talking the likes of Alec Baldwin and Dr. Ruth. Hey, who needs to do Dr. Phil when you can hang out with the master of psychiatry himself? Come and experience the last session of Dr. Freud on stage!
